The Beemo secure backup is a response to the attacks of the Cryptolocker virus which has been rampant since 2013. Cryptolocker is a new form of malware that makes all data stored on the hard disk (photos, videos, documents, etc.) unusable. To do this, once installed on the machine, usually through a fake email designed to imitate the appearance of an existing and legitimate company (a bank for example), it encrypts all the data stored on the hard disk but also on all the connected removable storage media, thanks to an encryption key.
Without a secure backup, all data is lost ! In the case of malware such as Cryptolocker, the damage suffered by a victim company is comparable to the loss of data due to a disaster (fire, flood), a hardware failure (hard disk failure), a handling error (involuntary deletion of data), or a malicious act (voluntary deletion of data). It is essential to consider the implementation of a secure backup solution.
Apart from restoring previously backed up data, there is currently no way to recover encrypted data. While the virus offers to recover the data encrypted by Cryptolocker against payment of a ransom, there is no guarantee that the decryption key will be recovered after payment.
In order to reduce the risk of being subjected to this type of racket, it is necessary to follow a few recommendations: update the operating system and the various software elements (browser, java, flash, etc.), be suspicious of emails that ask you to download an attachment or a file. Care should also be taken with illegally downloaded software, as it is not uncommon for the crack to run the software to contain malicious code.
Beyond these recommendations, having a backup solution remains the best way to protect against this type of attack in addition to the risks linked to technical incidents and handling errors. Regularly backing up data will avoid having to pay the ransom to recover the decryption key, it will suffice to restore the backed up data prior to the Cryptolocker attack.
