Since the beginning of 2016, the number of ransomware attacks has risen sharply, affecting many companies across all sectors.
And the variants are numerous, between Tor and Locky which ask you to pay to recover your own data, and other even more intrusive strains such as Popcorn Time which will ask you to pay, or to infect two of your contacts in turn to hope to recover your data, the blackmail suffered by victims no longer seems to have any limits.
Pay ? What guarantees ?
Data is necessarily valuable to its owners, and even more so to companies. The temptation to pay the ransom demanded may therefore be strong. But before offloading a large sum, it is necessary to remember that there is no guarantee that the data will actually be returned. Even worse, the victim may be asked to pay a second time. And the ransomware market is thriving, as in 2015 alone it cost businesses worldwide more than $350 million, according to Bitdefender.
What is the alternative ?
No anti-virus can protect you effectively against these attacks, and NAS devices are not safe either, since their write permissions are usually open, and the ransomware therefore has access to them. Regularly backing up your data is the only real alternative to paying the ransom.
